Let's Talk About Global Entry
You know that feeling when you finally land back in the States after a long international flight? You are tired, your phone is probably almost dead, and you are more than ready to get home. Then you see the customs line. That is exactly when Global Entry can come in clutch.
I recently went through the application process myself and have now used it twice when returning from international flights. Both times, I was very glad I had it. So, let’s talk about what it is, how I got it and whether I think it is worth it.
So What Is Global Entry?
Global Entry helps you get through customs faster when returning to the United States after an international trip. Instead of standing in the regular customs line, you use the Global Entry lane. All you have to do is stand in front of the camera, it takes your photo and compares it with your image already on file. Then boom, you’re done and on your way while everyone else is still waiting. I am not saying I felt a little fancy walking past that long customs line but I am not saying I didn’t either.
Another big perk is that Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck. That means you can also enjoy a quicker security experience at participating US airports before you board the plane. Faster through customs and easier airport security? Yes, please.
What Does It Cost?
Global Entry costs $120 and is good for five years once you are approved.
How Do You Get It?
The application itself is not hard, but you may need a little patience. You will create an account at the US Customs and Border Protection website, complete the application and pay the $120 nonrefundable fee. You will need your passport information along with your address, employment and travel history. Then you wait for conditional approval. Once that comes through, you will need to complete an in-person interview.
Finding an interview appointment can sometimes be the hardest part. Thankfully, there is another option called Enrollment on Arrival. This lets you complete your interview at certain airports when returning from an international trip. That is how I completed mine at the Atlanta airport. I was already there, so it was much easier than finding a separate appointment and making another trip.
What Is the Interview Like?
An officer reviewed my information, asked me a few questions, took my photo and collected my fingerprints. You will need your valid passport and another form of identification, so make sure you have everything with you. I think it took about three minutes.
Is It Worth It?
For me, absolutely! Even if you only travel internationally once or twice a year, it can make returning home so much easier. This is especially true if you have a connecting flight and need to collect your checked bag, recheck it and go through security again. Every minute counts, and the last thing you want is to spend those minutes standing in a customs line. Plus, TSA PreCheck is included, so you can benefit from it on your domestic trips too.
